- Excessive Sweating / Hyperhidrosis -

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a common problem affecting millions of Canadians. This physical disorder can cause significant emotional distress. Embarrassing stains or wet spots under the arms can necessitate frequent clothing changes and ruined garments. Wet hands result in avoidance of hand-shaking. Wet feet can cause issues such as athlete’s foot or make sandals and flip flops difficult to wear.

Perspiration is an essential body function for temperature-control, however, all localized body areas house only a small percentage of the body's sweat glands (the underarms, for instance, are home to less than 2% of the body’s sweat glands). Eliminating perspiration in these areas has little effect on the body’s ability to regulate its temperature.

In clients struggling with excessive perspiration, where even the strongest antiperspirants are not effective, the use of neuromodulators like Botox® can produce a dramatic decrease in perspiration. Botox has the ability to temporarily block the secretion of the chemical that is responsible for "turning on" the body's sweat glands. It essentially "turns off" sweating at the area where it has been injected. The injections are very shallow, allowing the medication to take effect precisely where it is placed. The result is about and 85% reduction in perspiration. Results begin as early as 4 days after treatment, with full effect in about 7 days. Generally, the results last anywhere from 6 to 14 months.

Clients are occasionally concerned that localized treatment will result in increased perspiration in other areas to compensate for suppressed sweating in treated areas. This has not been found to be the case. Research demonstrates that using Botox to treat excessive perspiration of the underarms, hands, feet, head and face (craniofacial), and other relatively small body areas (like under the breasts) is safe and effective.
